On behalf of the End Water Poverty Secretariat, I wish you all a happy new year ahead!
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to an exciting 2017. Last year, working as a united coalition and collaborating with other networks, we made great progress on our vision together; to end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis. As we have only 14 years left to achieve our new development agenda, it’s time we hit the ground running and make every second count!
Building a strong and effective coalition: EWP’s five year strategy
In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out our finalised strategy for our activities and objectives for the next five years ahead. EWP is gearing itself up to make sure that we hold our governments and other duty bearers fully accountable to achieving the critically important SDG on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and to meet the criteria of providing services within the human rights principles. To give you a snapshot, the strategy will focus the following three core objectives:
- Strong civil society organisations effectively advocating for SDG 6 and the human rights to water and sanitation.
- Empowered civil society organisations and communities demanding governments to prioritise WASH for the most marginalised and excluded populations.
- Effective civil society who are influencing international, regional, national and sub-national bodies to prioritise the realisation of the human rights to water and sanitation.
Membership renewal
We are in the process of renewing all members’ commitments to the coalition. Email notification has been sent to members together with a form for members to please complete in order that we can update our records: deadline for submission is 30 January 2017. Upcoming opportunities
We are so excited that our lead global campaign mobilisation – Water Action Month – is just around the corner. Last year, members from around the world took action to call for change and a better future. Let’s set a new record this year! We are designing some useful and fun materials for members so follow us on our website and on social media to stay up to date. You can also register your activities online; another way to connect with our wider membership and promote your activities.

Other upcoming events and opportunities
West African regional WASH civil society meeting
24 – 26 January: Cotonou, Benin
Civil society representatives will join forces to strengthen francophone networks and to hold governments accountable to their water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) commitments throughout West Africa. A diverse group of francophone civil society organisations (CSO) from West Africa will participate in the workshop for structuring and reinforcing advocacy and collaboration in the region. The meeting is co-organised by the Permanent Secretariat of Non-Government Orgnisations (SPONG) of Burkina Faso and a range of other lead organisations including; Coalition Eau, the Benin Water Partnership, Eau Vive, together with the support of Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) and its CSO partners.
SWA Finance and Sector Ministers Meetings
April 2017: Washington D.C, USA
The Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) platform will be hosting government representatives from finance, water and sanitation ministries during the World Bank meetings this coming Spring in Washington, D.C. This is an important opportunity for advocacy to engage your ministers and to influence their priorities. Please note: the third preparatory webinar will take place on 7 – 8 February, and will focus on analysing the sector’s readiness to meet the demands of the SDGs. The SWA Secretariat will send details for the webinar.
