November 2023 news: Accountability & Activism platform; SWA climate compendium

Accountability & Activism platform

Earlier this year CIVICUS, EWP and SWA launched the Accountability & Activism platform as a secure online space for water rights advocates to connect. The platform was created after members suggested establishing a community of practice following our exchange on expanding civic space in January.

Now that the registration process is complete, we are excited for members to start trading tactics and building alliances. From January onwards, SWA and EWP will be sharing monthly posts to spark discussion. As the platform was created as a space for civil society exchange, we otherwise encourage members to actively participate and take ownership of the platform. Here are a few ways you can use the platform:

  • Share examples of your campaigning challenges and advocacy achievements through posts and comments.
  • Network with other human rights advocates and initiate individual or group conversations with your global civil society colleagues through your inbox.
  • Access advocacy resources through the ‘Resources’ section.

If you need a refresher on how to navigate the platform, please watch CIVICUS’ video tutorials or review the induction recording:

Those who haven’t yet registered for the platform can do so here. We hope members will find this platform useful in establishing enduring systems of solidarity and advancing the human rights to water and sanitation.

SWA climate compendium

Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) have published a climate compendium to showcase the different ways its partners are advancing climate resilience in the water and sanitation sector. From water trackers in Costa Rica to Bangladesh’s ‘Mother Parliament’ imitative, the compendium contains numerous examples of civil society advocating to improve policies, strengthen accountability, and secure better financing for climate resilient services.

On page 35 Claim Your Water Rights is featured as an example of civil society upholding human rights to ensure a just response to the climate crisis. The case study focuses on the work of members in Ghana, Madagascar, Pakistan, Tanzania and Zambia, who used evidence-based advocacy, media influencing and community mobilisation to publicise the intrinsic connection between the water and climate crises while challenging duty-bearers to improve policies and practices.
